First Gate Drop Series – Part One Kickstart: The First Step to Going Racing

So… your child wants to go racing.

It usually starts pretty casually.

A few laps around the paddock. A birthday dirt bike. A ride at a friend’s property.

Then one day the question comes:

“Can I race?”

For many parents, that’s when things suddenly feel real. Racing sounds exciting… but also a little daunting.

The good news is that in Australia there’s a clear first step before riders line up on a start gate.

It’s called Kickstart.

What Is Kickstart?

Kickstart is the official introduction to motocross racing run through Motorcycling Australia.

Think of it as a welcome-to-racing session that helps riders understand how the sport works before they enter competition.

Kickstart introduces riders to things like:

• how the start gate works

• race procedures

• track safety and rider etiquette

• flag signals and marshals

• what happens during a race meeting

In simple terms, it prepares riders for what to expect when the gate drops.

And trust us — that first gate drop can feel like a big moment.

Why Kickstart Matters

Kickstart isn’t just helpful. It’s required.

In Australia, riders aged 6–16 must complete Kickstart before applying for a motocross race licence through Motorcycling Australia.

That means before a rider lines up at a race meeting, they must show they understand the basics of racing safely.

Kickstart helps riders learn:

• how the start gate works

• track etiquette around other riders

• flag signals and marshal instructions

• basic race day procedures

• the responsibility that comes with racing

Because motocross racing isn’t just about twisting the throttle.

It’s about riding safely and respectfully in a shared track environment.

And for parents, it’s reassuring to know that every rider on the gate has completed the same introduction to safety.

Showing You Can Handle the Bike

Another important part of Kickstart is demonstrating that a rider can control their bike safely.

Before entering races, riders need to show they can:

• start the bike safely

• stop under control

• ride calmly around other riders

• pick the bike up if it falls over

They might sound like simple skills — but they’re important foundations.

Motocross bikes can be heavy, powerful, and sometimes a little unpredictable for younger riders.

Kickstart allows coaches to confirm riders are ready to manage their bike in a race environment.

And yes… picking the bike up matters.

Because sooner or later, every rider drops one.

Usually when lots of people are watching.

Joining a Club – Your Racing Home

Once Kickstart is completed, the next step is joining a motocross club.

Clubs are the heart of motocross in Australia. They run practice days, race meetings and club championship series throughout the year.

For new families, club racing is the best place to start.

Club events are often:

• welcoming for beginners• smaller and less intimidating• a great place to learn race procedures• a chance to build confidence across multiple rounds

Most riders begin their journey at club level, learning the ropes and meeting other families along the way.

And many lifelong motocross friendships start right there.

Supporting Riders and Clubs

At R31 MX & Adventure, we run Kickstart sessions at motocross clubs to help riders take that first step into racing.

Our goal is simple — help riders gain their race licences while also helping clubs grow their rider communities.

Running Kickstart sessions at clubs means riders can often complete the program and then continue riding at the same track through practice days or club races.

It’s a great way to connect riders, families and local clubs.

Parents Learn a Lot Too

Let’s be honest.

The first race experience is usually just as new for parents as it is for riders.

Race days can be:

• loud

• dusty

• busy

• slightly chaotic

Kickstart helps families understand things like:

• how race meetings run

• what riders need to do before racing

• how the start process works

• what those coloured flags actually mean

Suddenly the race day environment starts to make a lot more sense.

Ride Ready → Race Ready

At R31 we talk about a simple pathway:

Ride Ready → Race Ready

Kickstart sits right in the middle of that journey.

Before riders think about results, trophies or lap times, they need the foundations that make motocross safe and enjoyable.

Things like:

• balance and bike control

• body position

• braking technique

• track awareness

• confidence on the bike

Kickstart helps riders move from “I can ride” to “I’m ready to race.”

The Goal of the First Race

Here’s a little secret from people who have been around motocross for a while.

The goal of your child’s first race isn’t to win.

It’s not even to go fast.

The goal is simply to:

✔ line up

✔ ride safely

✔ finish the race

✔ come back smiling

That’s it.

Because once a rider experiences that first gate drop, they’ve taken the biggest step in their motocross journey.
